The Benefits of Having a Hobby are Huge
Hobbies, and participating in recreational activities outside of work, have many health benefits. Studies show that people who participated in leisure activities enjoyed lower blood pressure, lower total cortisol, and generally better physical function.
If improved physical health isn’t enough to convince you to take time for hobbies, a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology showed strong links between improved job performance and participation in leisure activities outside of work.
Don't Be Afraid to Try a New Hobby
If you are a workaholic or you’re working too much, the idea of taking time for fun can be terrifying. You fear you’ll fall behind at work, and that your work will be negatively affected. But that’s not the case. In fact, it will have the opposite effect. I speak from personal experience as a reformed workaholic.
Before developing my concepts in Kick Ass and Have a Life, I considered work to be my hobby. I didn’t even attempt to find anything else. I loved my job/success, so what more could I need? Boy, was I wrong.
Hobbies Will Change Your Life
Now, hobbies are one of the best things in my life. They soothe my soul, refresh my creativity, increase my productivity, and are a critical piece of my now balanced life.
You may be in a position (like I once was) where you believe work is your hobby, the only fun you need. And you simply don’t have the time for a hobby. You aren’t being fair to yourself. The truth is you do have time for hobbies and leisure.
Take some time to try new things. Even that part of the journey will deliver many positive benefits in both your personal and professional lives. You may even find a hidden talent you never knew you had!
Decrease Your Stress: Go Get a Hobby
Taking time to step away from work gives your mind the chance to rest and recharge. You’ll see your stress drop and your productivity increase. As hard as this may be at first, try setting aside two hours once a week to find and then participate in a hobby.
Once you find something (or several things) you love, those two hours will fly by. Life is short, so find time for a hobby. You may just find that leads you to something bigger and better than you ever expected.
I have lots of great ideas and information in the Hobby Toolbox that is part of your new Kick Ass Life!
Stay Tuned,
